Various Characters

World Premiere

★★★★ sensitively portrays a desire for connection and belonging while navigating familiar second and third generation migrant experiences

“How many times in your life have you asked yourself, why am I alone? I mean, what year is it?”

Nina wants to race into the future. Raoul wants one more chance. Mile wants to escape responsibility. Boris wants to live a romantic fantasy. Zita wants to rearrange the world. Greta wants to reverse her misfortune.

Various Characters follows the stories of six emotionally isolated characters, each grappling with their own personal coming-of-age, each determined to fulfil their dreams, or something close enough.

Set in the early days of the 21 century, a time of cultural collision and social decay, when Australia was starting to reckon with its troubled history and recognised an uncertain future. But it is also about now: the weird effects of cultural assimilation, how we understand difference, and how we might break through what divides us.

This is no nostalgic period piece — rather, a sincere look at the questions of Australian identity that persist in the present.
